Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
