Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
