Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a announcement clip is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
