British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
