The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
